Who Would Jesus Vote For?

There is a deep ideological divide in the United States today.  Since this is a Presidential election year, this divide is becoming more evident every day.  The “hot button” issues include abortion, gay rights, war, unemployment, religious freedom, immigration, health care, taxation, business ethics, terrorism, women’s rights, and education, plus many other issues.  One major party portrays themselves as the champions of the poor, the oppressed, and the middle class.  The other portrays themselves as the champions of free enterprise and morality.  Other smaller parties champion liberty, globalism, limited government, or environmental responsibility.  All politicians and political parties believe their platform, their beliefs, their worldview, is the answer to America’s problems.

My belief is, none of the above.

Despite the belief by many evangelicals that Jesus was a Republican, and the belief by many mainline Christians that Jesus was a Democrat, Jesus was neither; nor was he a Libertarian, a Socialist, a Green Partier, a Tea Partier, or an Occupier.

There is a common flaw with all political parties.  All political parties are based on the faulty presupposition that the political process can solve America’s problems.   All political parties believe that if enough people believe and behave the same way they do, then they will be able to create a culture that eliminates most, if not all, of the evils we face as Americans.

This is a lie from the pit of Hell.

No political party can solve America’s problems, because the root cause of every problem in America is not political; it’s spiritual.  The cause of every problem faced by humanity is sin.  No political party or politician will ever have a solution for sin.  The only solution for sin is Jesus Christ.

According to the Bible, sin began when Adam rebelled against God.  Each of us has inherited a sin nature from our distant grandfather, Adam.  The Apostle Paul tells us, “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned…much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many” (Romans 5:12, 15).  Only through the blood of Jesus Christ can sin be removed;  the perfect combination of God and Man, who never sinned, took mankind’s sin upon Himself, and paid the penalty for our sin with His own blood.  All we must do to receive this forgiveness is to believe in Him, and receive the gift of forgiveness and grace He offers.

Jesus Christ is the only solution for sin, and since sin is the root cause of every problem and evil in the world, Jesus Christ is the only solution for our problems.  This is why no political candidate or party, no system of government, and nothing human beings can do, can ever solve the issues we face.  Politics is based on the faulty belief that human beings can solve our own problems.  God says we cannot.

Who would Jesus vote for?  I believe, nobody.

Who should Christians vote for?

Although I believe my reasoning is based on Biblical principles, the following is just my personal opinion.  I think it is important that Christians exercise their right to vote.  I also believe that no political party represents the Biblical position.  I believe Christians should vote for whoever will:  A) allow Christians to worship and evangelize most freely, both in public and in private; and B) support a Biblical model for morality.  There are other issues as well, but in my opinion, these are the two biggest issues.  I also believe it is important for Christians to remember that Jesus was not a Republican, nor a Democrat; nor was He affiliated with any human organization.  Vote for the person, not the party.  When possible, vote for a Christian who loves and walks with the Lord; when this is not an option, vote for the person who supports freedom of religion and Biblical morality.

Christian:  Be informed about the candidates and the issues.  Be involved in the political debate and process.  And vote.  But, do not put your faith in any human institution; only put your faith in Jesus Christ.
