In the Land of Tridania

The Land of Tridania

Once upon a time there was a land called Tridania.  The people of Tridania were known as the Trids.  Tridania was located in a valley surrounded by extremely tall mountains. There wasn’t room for an airport, so the only way to travel out of the valley was to climb over the mountains on a single, narrow road.  Unfortunately, the mountains were inhabited by giants.  Every time a Trid tried to leave Tridania, a giant would meet them along the road, pick them up, and kick them back down the side of the mountain.  So, nobody ever left Tridania.

One day a Jewish couple living in Tridania wanted to get married, but the local rabbi was ill.  So, they radioed for a replacement rabbi to perform the ceremony.  The rabbi chartered a small plane, then parachuted into the village.

After the ceremony, the rabbi inquired about leaving.  He was told, “The only way to leave

Tridania is to follow the narrow road over the mountains, but one of the giants who live along the road always picks up any Trid that tries to leave and kicks them back down the side of the mountain.  There’s no way out.  You’ll have to stay.”

The rabbi thought about it for a while, then replied, “I really want to leave, so I think I’ll take my chances.”  So, off he set, early the next morning, walking along the narrow road into the mountains.

The first few miles were uneventful.  However, late in the afternoon, the rabbi saw a giant, standing by a boulder along the side of the road, wearing very large boots and carrying an enormous club.  Cautiously,

the rabbi slowly continued walking.  Much to his surprise, the giant ignored him completely.  The rabbi was able to walk right past the giant.

A couple of minutes later, the rabbi’s curiosity got the best of him, so he turned around and went back to where the giant was standing.  The rabbi tugged on the bottom of the giant’s pant leg to get his attention, then asked, “Mr. Giant, why didn’t you kick me back down the side of the mountain?  The Trids told me that it was impossible to leave Tridania along this narrow road, because the giants always kicked them back down the side of the mountain.”

The giant smiled, and replied, “Silly rabbi, kicks are for Trids.”
